The used car inspection checklist for Suffolk County buyers
What you don't know before signing a used car contract can cost you thousands after. This checklist covers the mechanical, cosmetic, and title red flags that experienced buyers always check — and first-time buyers often miss.
Before you even see the car
Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck report using the VIN. Look for accident history, odometer rollbacks, salvage or rebuilt titles, and service records. A clean title with consistent mileage history is a green flag. Anything else warrants extra scrutiny.
Exterior inspection
Look at the car from every angle in daylight. Mismatched paint panels indicate prior body work. Check door gaps — uneven gaps mean the frame may have been bent. Look for rust along the wheel wells, undercarriage, and door bottoms. These are Suffolk County's winter salt problem areas.
Under the hood
Check the oil dipstick — milky or frothy oil means coolant is mixing with oil, which is a head gasket problem. Look at the coolant reservoir. Check belt and hose condition. Look for fresh gasket sealant around the valve cover, which can indicate recent repairs masking a leak.
Test drive checklist
Drive it on the highway and in stop-and-go traffic. Listen for: transmission hesitation or slipping, brake pulsation (steering wheel shake when stopping), clunking over bumps (worn suspension), and AC/heat performance. All warning lights should be off — if a seller says they just turned on, walk.
At the dealership
Ask for the dealer's inspection report. If they don't have one, ask why. Request any known issues in writing before you negotiate price. In New York State, as-is sales are legal for used cars — once you sign, the dealer owes you nothing. Get everything in writing first.
